Moyogalpa ferry port on Ometepe Island, Lake Nicaragua

Ometepe and San Juan del Sur

Trade the Pacific coast for an island in Lake Nicaragua, or finish your island stay at the beach. The link between them is San Jorge, the mainland ferry port near Rivas.

01 · GET THE PORTS RIGHT

San Jorge is on the mainland

Rivas is the mainland bus connection. The ferry departs from nearby San Jorge. On Ometepe, Moyogalpa and San José del Sur are different landing points. Tell the person collecting you the arrival port printed on your ticket.

Puerto San Jorge

Go to this port to board for Ometepe. If coming by local bus to Rivas, allow for the separate ground transfer to San Jorge, then time to find the boat and board.

Some crossings use this island port. It sounds similar to San Juan del Sur on the Pacific. Use the complete port name when sharing your pickup location.

02 · THE CONNECTION

Island first or beach first?

A common estimate for the lake crossing is about an hour. That covers the time on the water. Add road travel on both sides, time to board and a buffer for changing lake conditions.

San Juan del Sur → Ometepe

A private ride can take you to Puerto San Jorge. By public transport, go from town to Rivas, then continue to the port. Book the island-side pickup for the port used by your sailing.

Confirm your island departure dock. Cross to San Jorge, then continue by road directly to the coast or change buses in Rivas. If your hotel is Surf Ranch, send the resort pin so a driver takes you to Las Delicias.

03 · SAMPLE FOUR-NIGHT STAY

Give each destination a full day

One workable plan is two nights on Ometepe and two at Surf Ranch. Put your island outing on the middle day there, and reserve your full coastal day for a surf lesson, beach visit or pool time. Keep the transfer day lighter so a later ferry doesn’t cost you a planned activity.

If you have only one open day

Before planning a day trip, check the same-day outward and return boats and both ground connections. If that leaves little time on the island, an overnight stay buys you a morning there without a second crossing that afternoon.

04 · BEFORE THE CROSSING

Confirm the sailing, pickup and vehicle space

Passengers traveling on foot should confirm the departure time and port that day. Taking a vehicle? Ask the ferry operator about vehicle reservation, boarding time and space on the particular sailing. Agree on a plan if the boat changes before committing to an onward taxi.
